Sundance 2010 Main Street Video

Here’s a great clip from our friends at CNN.   They’ve been using Treasure Mountain Inn as a broadcast location since 2002.

Sundance/Slamdance 2010

Treasure Mountain Inn is once again the host to the Slamdance Film Festival (14 years now).   They put out a great selection of films for 2010 and tickets sales have been brisk.   After some big success in recent years (Mad Hot Ballroom to name one), Slamdance continues to generate high quality documentaries.  This year’s I am Comic, has been particularly well received.  Steven Soderberg also made a big splash with his portrait of Spalding Grey in And Everything Is Going Fine.   Overall, the 2010 Sundance Film Festival has been enjoyable with scaled back events and smaller crowds.    Hollywood is bouncing back, but remains cautious and uncharacteristically restrained.
Most importantly, film-goers have been treated to a winter wonderland with wave after wave of classic Utah snow with the occasional sunny pause.   Too bad most of them are too busy to ski so we get to hog all the powder.   Don’t worry, more snow is on the way….

The temps have remained cold so the snow could survive the high pressure that has languished over us since the long ago Christmas storm, so we weren’t complaining.  We sharpened our edges and enjoyed the speed of hard-packed.  We made the most of it and dusted off our mountain bikes, even.  But this!  This is what we live for–snow measured in inches per hour, that falls straight and silently, transforming boulders to pillowy mounds, ridgelines into corniced waves.  Tall pines become much shorter as the floor of the forest rises; and the space between them more navigable as the underbrush and lower branches are blanketed.  The resorts will stay fresh because Sundance/Slamdance Film Festival is upon us and that fills the town with a breed that prefers crowded, darkened theaters and melodrama to wide open spaces and natural wonder of snowy mountains and a bracing cold.  It takes all kinds.  ”Ski and let live!”

Bike Season’s over–dust off your skis

The snow is falling as I write and in true Utah tradition, it’s like like down.  The storm that’s delivering it isn’t so gentle, though.  Out of the north, coming in low and fast.  If I had to guess, I’d say winter were here.  So, for all you skiers–fret not.  We’re going to go check out the Moab desert while the snow gods lay the foundation for this winter, but I’ll be checking on their work from time to time, taking pictures.  Here’s a glimpse of last evening.  Enjoy.

Skipping Fall

leaves-and-snow

So much for fall!    We always receive a little snow in September, but rarely does it stick.   It appears that we have jumped straight from summer to winter this year.   Above 8000 ft, the ground is frozen and the snowpack is already growing.   Do we dare hope to be skiing by Halloween?     At the very least—with a little help from the snow gods—we hope to enjoy an early start to our ski season.   Keep one eye on the snow report and the another on our early season specials.   What’s not to love about cheap rooms, no crowds and virgin snow.

Summer in the City!

Watching the parade from the TMI balcony

Watching the parade from the TMI balcony

As the saying goes: “People come to Park City for the snow, but they stay for the summer.”

Summer was late to arrive this year, but July has been beautiful! While much of the country bakes, our temps have hovered in the mid-70’s with big blue skies, a light breeze, and the occasional afternoon shower. We can thank the long and wet spring for a green mountains and spectacular wildflowers.

I couldn’t think of anyplace I’d rather be right now….

Just when you thought it was spring…

We know better!  It’s the mountains and we’re at 7000 feet at the base, so 60 degrees in March is just a foretaste of the magical mountain summers we get to enjoy, but don’t put your skis away yet. You’ll almost surely need them till mid-April, and you may be wishing for them as late as Memorial Day.   There’s a big storm over us right now that could deliver as much as 36 inches of new snow.  Of course you’ll have to hike for your turns after the resort closes, so come and get it while the chairs are still running.   See you on the mountain!
